Oval Face Shape? Here's your guide to selecting Jewelry

Oval Face Shape

If you have an oval face like Rihanna you’ll want to balance your proportions by creating the appearance that your face is wider.

Here is a real quick recap of how to tell if you have an oval face shape:

@badgalriri

  • Forehead: the width of the forehead is smaller than the width of the cheekbones. A “tall” forehead
  • Cheekbone: the widest part of the face
  • Jawline: no sharp angles on the jaw or chin
  • Face: longer than it is wide

Your face shape has a huge effect on which jewelry matches you best. The right earrings or necklaces can complement your best features, while the wrong jewelry can exaggerate your look or draw too much attention to certain areas of your face.

The features within the face can be sharp and angular or soft and curved, but the overall face shape will be an oval.

As oval faces are already relatively long, the most flattering jewelry styles are ones that avoid elongating the face any further.

Earrings:

For an oval face, look to add width across the face by wearing stud or cluster earrings.

Look for bright jewelled earrings that attract attention across the face, for example, small hoops

Avoid very long earrings with a straight drop, as this adds additional length to the face.

To minimize a thin oval face or a too-long nose, use styles that creep up the ear or have wings that sweep upward.

Echo the oval face with hoops, hoops in circles, chandeliers and other soft, curving designs using open link chain, teardrops or dramatically set off the oval face with triangle-shaped earrings.

Jessica’s long earrings accentuate the length of her face, whereas the cluster earrings in the second photo give her face more width and roundness by drawing the eye horizontally.

Necklaces:

Look for necklaces that are fairly short. A great length is one that just graces the collarbone.

Chunky necklaces that stay in a rounded shape (rather than a V-shape) are a great idea for adding some curves below your jawline.

Avoid long drop necklaces that extend past your bust, as these really elongate your face.

In the first photo, the long earrings and deep v neckline elongate Jessica’s face, whereas in the second photo the curved necklace, high neckline and cluster earrings give her face width and balance.

Necklaces should complement the neckline worn, as well as the wearer's other qualities: chokers emphasize her long neck, a long string of pearls worn flapper-style lengthens her torso and low-hanging necklaces with drops accent a low-cut neckline.

The soft curves of the oval face are best accented by soft curving shapes such as pearls, ribbon, open link chain, affirmation rings, and more.

The crucial part of selecting for face shapes is to ensure that the jewelry chosen is proportional to the size of the face. No matter its shape, a small face will become overwhelmed by oversized earrings, even in the recommended styles.
